Location

We are located in Durrus (Irish: Dubh Ros / Durrás) which is a small village located in West Cork, six miles (10 km) from Bantry, County Cork, Ireland. Durrus was not always known as Durrus – in fact it previously had two names: Four Mile Water (mid-19th century, after the nearby river) and Carrigboi (from Carraig Bhuí, the Irish for Yellow Rock).

The village today boasts four pubs, two shops, a post office, a charity ship, two national schools, a Garda station and two churches which serve a growing population.

The village store has cleverly captured its position very cleverly with the name ‘The Gateway’ for its new restaurant. Durrus is a busy strategic place village leading into the Mizen and Sheep’s Head Peninsulas, popular with locals and tourists alike. The Good Things Cafe, a gourmet dining place, also brings in visitors, and Durrus is now famous for a delicious cheese made just outside the village, known appropriately as ‘Durrus Cheese’. Carrigbui Engineering is also based locally and although there are no traditional smithies remaining, Cronin’s Forge continues to make wonderful decorative ironwork pieces.
